%X El presente ensayo académico aborda el difícil y abarcador tema de la aparición del libro, partiendo de los primeros intentos humanos por plasmar información de forma gráfica, conocidos como protoescritura. Se detalla, además, el papel que jugó, en edades tempranas de esta historia, la Antigua Mesopotamia como cuna de la escritura en el seno de la cultura sumeria. Una mención de importancia lo reciben los materiales o sustratos físicos, toda vez que la evolución de la escritura puede ser comprendida y contada únicamente cuando se va de la mano de los soportes empleados para alojarla, en este particular se abordó el desarrollo progresivo de disímiles técnicas aplicadas para la obtención de materiales más idóneos que sirvieran al noble propósito de la escritura. El tránsito que se produjo desde la labor de los copistas, realizando copias manuales de los primeros libros hasta la mecanización de este proceso y la aparición de la imprenta provista de tipos móviles de metal es una temática más de presencia obligada en el presente estudio. Como último, se abordan un conjunto de términos vinculados al libro, tales como: soporte escritural, la hoja continua de papel y la linotipia, entre otros.   This academic essay addresses the difficult and wide theme of the book's appearance, starting with the first human attempts to capture information in graphic form, known as proto-writing. It also details the role played, at an early age in this history, ancient Mesopotamia as the cradle of writing within the Sumerian culture. An important mention is given to materials or physical substrates, since the evolution of writing can be understood only when it goes hand in hand with the supports used; in this particular the progressive development of dissimilar techniques was addressed, applied to obtain more suitable materials that serve the noble purpose of writing. The transit that took place from the work of the copyists, making manual copies of the first books until the mechanization of this process and the appearance of the printing press provided with mobile types of metal is a thematic of forced presence in the present study. As last, a set of terms linked to the book are addressed, such as: scriptural support, the continuous sheet of paper and the linotype, among others.
